Another 4,000 Mini Red Hot's and Mini Jet Black's were sold in export markets.
The Mini Red Hot and Mini Jet Black
clearly mark the Mini's progress from the shadow of death with
the introduction of the Metro, and the start of the Mini's
ascendancy as a fashion icon, or indeed a fashion accessory. In
the designer obsessed, post 'Big Bang' late 1980's, the Mini Jet
Black and Red Hot strikingly mirrored the power fashions of the
Yuppie era. The Mini Red Hot was appropriately finished in red,
with a full length black coachline encircling the body from one
door, via the rear of the car to the other door. Similarly the
Mini Jet Black was black, and bore a contrasting full length red
coachline from door to door. Both cars featured either 'Red Hot'
or 'Jet Black' logo's in the usual places on the rear side panels
and bootlid
Both cars where fitted with chrome bumpers,
door handles and exhaust trim, with full width silver plastic
wheel trims. Unusually, both cars had a unique feature, in that
the outer rim of the 12" steel wheels visible between the
tyre and the silver wheel trims was painted very distinctively in
red. Inside the car the red & black theme continued with
black velour seats with red piping, black carpets, black trim and
red seat belts. More distinctive features adorned the outside of
the cars, with each carrying a 'Red Hot' or 'Jet Black' grille
badge on a black grille, and black windscreen wipers. Finishing
the package was Syndym tinted glass (with chrome framed opening
rear windows) and a push button MW/LW radio.
The Japanese export models of the Mini Jet Black and Mini Red Hot again featured the unique alloy sports steering wheel first used on the Mini Park Lane.
