1988 saw
the 1980's 'designer' theme hit the big time with the launch of
the first 'real' designer Mini - the Mini Designer, whose
designer was another success from the Swinging Sixties, and
closely associated with the other 'Mini' (the skirt) - Mary Quant.
In many ways the Mini Designer was the most radical Limited
Edition Mini. The Mary Quant 'effect' was clearly visible both on
the outside and inside the Mini Designer- from the unique Nimbus
grey grille surrounds and headlamp rims, thru to the 'zebra
crossing' seat trim.
Originally to be called the 'Mini Mary Quant', Austin Rover quickly changed the name to just the 'Mini Designer' when the members of the public invited to the product clinics showed they did'nt like the idea of Mary's name on the car (but then if they weren't Mini enthusiasts, they probably wouldn't have liked anyone's name on the car..! ). However, Mary did get her signature on both of the front seats and her 'Daisy' motif on the centre of the steering wheel.
On the outside of the car the usual Nimbus
grey was used for the wheel arches, door handles and bumpers.
